This is somewhat inspired by "The Great Piece of Turf" by Albrecht Durer (1471-1528). But, unlike Durer's piece, which is highly detailed, this painting was about simplifying the scene. It takes discipline to know just how far to push a painting, how much detail to provide and how much to leave to the viewers imagination. The majority of this painting is non-descript, even the grasses don't provide a lot of detail. The reflections on the river are reduced to subtle shifts in purple tone. The background and foreground suggest foliage along the banks of the river.
